Securing a sustainable future depends on many aspects, including technologies enabled by emergent materials such as superconductors, optical crystals, electronic and energy materials. This Nature Conference will feature leaders of these diverse and interdisciplinary fields, who will come together to discuss the recent breakthroughs as well as challenges that we still face. Our scientific programme will highlight innovative theoretical and experimental approaches, not least the high-pressure reactions and growth of single crystals, which could allow us to predict, design, and synthesize materials with favourable properties. An additional and equally important focus will be the understanding of the role of electronic structures in determining interesting properties and realising promising applications.
